As part of my 'Inspire Section', I have created a presentation for my Rainbows and Brownies, looking at the statistics and importance of children's literacy, however presenting it in a child-friendly way. The presentation can be found below, and includes a discussion and short quiz to keep them involved and engaged throughout. As part of my inspire session, I have used the Brownie UMA, Buddy Bingo, as a game, but themed the pairs around book characters, including characters such as Alice and The Mad Hatter and Matilda and Miss Honey.

As well as my presentation, I am hoping to get some of my Rainbows and Brownies signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge at our local library, I am also running a book drive in our unit to collect books for the charity 'Books2Africa', a fantastic charity who send donated books to communities in needs in Africa.

Below you can find the slides from my presentation:

Inspire evening at Rainbows and Brownies!

On June 24th, I ran my Inspire evening for my Queens Guide Award, this included presenting my presentation to the girls and playing some games themed around books! They found out more about the Summer Reading Challenge and our Books2Africa drive, they also each brought a book in they no longer wanted to donate to the charity - Below are some photos of the girls working on activities I had in my inspire session, including, writing down why they think reading is important, watching a video on the Summer Reading Challenge and taking part in the Buddy Bingo game:

'Books2Africa' Book Drive

On April 29th, I organised a fundraiser for the Books2Africa charity. All money raised was to go to the charity through buying more books from local charity shops to send. The evening ran really well and we raised a total of £170, through having a raffle, guess how many sweets in the jar, a cake sale, and teas and coffees!

Following on from my Inspire session held on June 24th, my Rainbows and Brownies brought in a book each, which totalled 23 books donated! On June 25th, using the money raised at our fundraiser in April, I went around local charity shops to purchase more books to donate, here is our total haul of books to send to the Books2Africa charity! We have a total of 89 books.

Total Hours:

2.5 hours planning the Inspire evening and the presentation

6.5 hours planning and running the fundraiser evening

1.25 hours running the Inspire evening session

1.5 hour purchasing books for the book drive and getting shipment ready

11.75 hours total for Inspire
