Reflection
Describe your activity or role.
For my community action project I looked into Children's literacy and the effects the Covid-19 pandemic has had on young people. I volunteered at Kendal library as part of my practical, supporting young people to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, a project which runs over the summer holidays to keep young people reading whilst not in school. For my inspire section, I ran a fundraiser to run money for the Books2Africa book drive with my Rainbow and Brownie unit.
Why did you choose it for this section?
I support young people through my job, working with vulnerable young people. It's important for me to understand the challenges that they may face in education as well as the impact the pandemic may have had on them and what resources are out there to provide additional support for them.
What have you learnt from the activity or role?
I have learnt more about what challenges young people have faced during the pandemic and what they still may face academically post-pandemic. I have learnt more about programmes, charities and statistics as well as more about learning poverty and the education crisis which is currently effecting most countries around the world.
What core skills have you developed and how?
Teamwork - Working together as a team to organise the fundraiser for the Books2Africa drive as well as working with others on the Summer Reading Challenge
Leadership - Inspiring my Girlguiding unit to take part in fundraising and community action projects, raising money for a community in need.
What would you change or improve on if you did this activity again?
If possible, I would have liked to have spent more time with the Summer Reading Challenge, however due to my working timetable and going on a Girlguiding international, I wasn't able to volunteer quite as much as I would have liked, however I did complete all the hours I needed.
If applicable, how has it made a positive impact in Girlguiding
Working to inspire the young people in my unit to take part in community action projects and the impact they can have on communities in the needs, and hopefully get my new Girlguiding unit I am move to after summer involved in other community action projects.
Through this challenge you’ll have the opportunity to increase your knowledge of an issue outside of Girlguiding. You’ll develop a greater understanding of the world around you, become more involved, make a difference and inspire others.
You’ll need to choose a cause you feel passionate about and want to make a difference in. Make sure to pick a topic you can get involved in practically!
You’ll have the chance to make an impact at a local, UK-wide or international level. This might involve working with others to achieve something together!
This should be completed with a minimum of 25 hours.
