Challenge One

The History of Guiding

About Challenge One

Challenge one is about the history of Girl Guiding starting from the first movement in 1909 and the development of World Guiding. The Challenge is broken down into 3 sections;

  • Being able to talk about guiding from its beginning at the Crystal Palace Rally in 1909, including the development of World Guiding.

  • Knowing how Guiding developed in your own country, The U.K.

  • Understanding the basic aims and principles.

Aims and Principles

Fun, Friendship, Challenge and Adventure.

The time of Girlguiding is to allow girls across the world to do amazing things, whether that's developing themselves as a person or helping their community and country, girls get to thrive, grow and make friendships whilst having fun an a space safe for them.

Girlguiding's four key messages include;

  1. We are for all girls.

  2. We give girls their own space.

  3. We give girls a voice.

  4. We change as the lives of girls change.

To allow girls to be able to be themselves in units, have a voice and be able to see what they can do, unit leaders follow the 5 essentials to help the girls;

  1. Working together in small groups

  2. Encouraging self-government and decision making

  3. A balanced and varied programme which is girl-led

  4. Caring for the individual

  5. Sharing a commitment to a common standard.

Girlguiding is a place for girls to feel like they belong, to not be compared to others and be equal.
